"No mercy for the Top Two. No mercy at all..." |
After the extremely popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which even took a similar 3rd place in the 2007 awards, expectations were set impossibly high for the sequel. Whether that expectation was going to be met, however, didn't matter for gamers as the game shattered all previous pre-order and opening-day sales records. But when it actually came to time for critics and gamers alike to get their hands on the game, many they were left with a sour taste in their mouth. While the visual quality and sound design of MW2 is quite top-notch, and the co-op missions as a mostly unique and exicting experience, critics bombarded the game's single-player campaign, stating that it did not live up to the series's standards and that the length was very underwhelming. The minimal amount of change from the previous game and the abundant glitches were also noted, leaving MW2 slightly disappointment for many. Nevertheless, MW2's multiplayer is still one of the best around, and even though the story was sloppily told, the gameplay is akin to a thrilling action movie and is sure to kick the testosterone in you. With the help of the prestigious Gamespy and Gametrailers GotY, MW2 earns this legendary 3rd position amogst the games of 2009.

"I'll smash your face in... right after I celebrate my victory!" |
Surprised? Well you shouldn't be. Regarded as THE greatest superhero game of all time, and one of the best games of this generation, Batman: Arkham Asylum blew almost everyone, including us, away and easily squashes its competition to reach his outstanding 2nd place. When Batman: AA was first announced, many expected it to fail like the countless other licenced games before it. Instead, we were faced with one of the most polished games of this generation, and delighted to an extremely well-crafted story and character design. The Batman folklore in the game is presented in such an ingenious way that it even appeals to non-Batman fans, and when mixed in with the outstanding visuals, stellar voice-acting, precise and brutal combat, thrilling stealth, challenging puzzles, and loads of challenge rooms for after you beat the game, there is no doubt now why Batman: Arkham Asylum blew everyone's expectations so out of the water, and presented such a well-crafted game that many critics immediately fell love with, and were obliged to help shoot it up to this 2nd place. While some deemed the combat a button-mash fest, the stealth mechanics to be somewhat repetitive, and the mission design to be sometimes boring, all of that was dwarfed by the game's phenomenal good aspects, and so those surprised to see this game up here should no longer be, because Batman: Arkham Asylum has earned this outstanding 2nd place amonst the games of 2009.
1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

"As you can see, bullets can't even hit Nathan Dake..." |
Just by looking at the list of these Game of the Year Awards, there is absolutely no question that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is not just the greatest game of 2009, but one of the best of all time, shattering all previous records for GotY awards won by a single game. Just like Assassin's Creed II and Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 takes phenomenal leaps from its already amazing predecessor and gives such a well-crafted and epic action experience that it won an unparalleled, unanimous agreement between almost all of the major critics out there, including such juggernauts as IGN, X-play, Spike TV, Eurogamer, 1Up, Game Informer, and so much more. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves picks up roughly 2 years after the series's protagonist, Nathan Drake, uncovered the mystery of El Dorado. Now the witty hero is in search of Marco Polo's lost fleets and the powerful Cintamanni Stone. But he isn't the only one, as regular encounters with dangerous mercenaries and war criminals constantly keep Drake and his allies on his toes. But this simple and rather straight-forward story is not what makes Uncharted 2 such a marvelous gem. Naughty Dog responded to of all the complaints of the original game, and crafted a game a million times better. The story-telling and voice-acting are absolutely phenomenal, which truly immerse players in the game world. The action sequences in Uncharted 2 are absolutely unmatched, with set pieces like the one involving a firefight inside a collapsing building, or the epic train sequence where the player must progress through hordes of enemies and a merciless helicopter while on top a moving train. And when all these things are mixed in with the mind-blowing visuals, it is easy to see how Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has become the first game to pass the 100 GotY threshold. Congratulations to Naughty Dog for delivering one of the greatest games of all time.
